Coast Broadband
Coming in 2027

nbn® LEO satellite internet is on its way.

nbn is moving its satellite service to a new Low Earth Orbit (LEO) network, powered by Amazon Leo. It’s built for homes and businesses in nbn’s satellite footprint, and nbn expects it to be more responsive than today’s Sky Muster. Coast Broadband plans to offer nbn LEO plans when it launches, and every connection will still help fund a local surf club.

What’s changing

A big step up for satellite internet

Here’s what nbn has announced for its new satellite service.

Satellites much closer to Earth

Sky Muster satellites orbit about 36,000 km above the Earth. nbn LEO uses satellites much closer in, so data travels a shorter distance. nbn expects lower latency and better upload performance, which helps video calls, online learning and running a business.

Uncapped data at launch*

nbn’s introductory plans are planned with wholesale speeds of up to 50/10 Mbps and up to 100/20 Mbps**, with uncapped data. Faster plans may follow as the service grows.

Installed for you

For eligible customers, nbn plans a standard professional installation and an equipment package, including a Wi-Fi router, at no upfront wholesale charge. Prefer to do it yourself? Self-install will be an option too.

Sky Muster vs nbn LEO

What’s different

nbn’s Sky Muster satellites are reaching the end of their working life. nbn LEO replaces them using Amazon Leo, formerly known as Project Kuiper: a large network of satellites in Low Earth Orbit.

Good to know

Common questions

Who can get nbn LEO?

nbn LEO is being rolled out progressively to homes and businesses across nbn’s satellite footprint, which today is served by Sky Muster. nbn decides which premises are eligible. If your address is in the footprint, register your interest and we’ll let you know when you can sign up.

When can I sign up?

Not yet. nbn plans to begin testing later in 2026, followed by customer trials. Eligible customers can generally expect to start moving to nbn LEO from around mid-2027, with the rollout happening in stages as capacity becomes available.

What speeds will it offer?

At launch, nbn plans to offer plans with wholesale speeds of up to 50/10 Mbps and up to 100/20 Mbps, with higher speed plans possibly added later. These are maximum wholesale speeds, not guaranteed. Your actual speed will depend on things like line of sight to the satellite, the weather and how busy the network is.

Is there a data limit?

nbn says its introductory nbn LEO plans offer uncapped data. Fair use and other conditions may apply.

Will I pay for installation?

For eligible customers, nbn plans to provide a standard professional installation and an equipment package, including a Wi-Fi router, at no upfront wholesale charge. You’ll also be able to install it yourself if you prefer. We’ll confirm Coast Broadband’s plans and any charges before you sign up.

I’m on Sky Muster now. What happens to my service?

nbn expects existing Sky Muster and Sky Muster Plus services to keep working while customers move to nbn LEO, so you shouldn’t be left without a connection. nbn also plans special wholesale pricing offers for eligible Sky Muster and Sky Muster Plus customers who upgrade. You don’t need to do anything yet.

Is Amazon Leo the same as Project Kuiper?

Yes. Amazon Leo is the new name for Project Kuiper, Amazon’s network of Low Earth Orbit satellites. nbn has partnered with Amazon Leo to power nbn LEO.

Do I buy it from Amazon?

No. nbn LEO is part of the nbn network, so you’ll buy it through a participating internet provider, like Coast Broadband, the same way you buy other nbn services.

Will the price depend on where I live?

No. nbn says its wholesale nbn LEO pricing will be the same across the whole satellite footprint and won’t change based on location or demand. Coast Broadband’s plan pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.

Do I need new equipment?

Yes. nbn LEO uses different satellites, so it needs new equipment at your place. For eligible customers, nbn plans to supply an equipment package with a Wi-Fi router and a standard professional installation at no upfront wholesale charge.

Is this the same as Starlink?

No. Starlink is a separate satellite service and isn’t part of the nbn network. nbn LEO is an nbn service, with installation and ongoing support from nbn’s national technician network.

* Fair use and other conditions may apply.

** Speeds are not guaranteed. The stated maximum wholesale speeds are provided on a best efforts basis and actual speeds may vary, depending on line of sight to the satellite, geography, weather, your plan, busy periods, your Wi-Fi router and the number of devices online.
