How to set up your TP-Link VX230v

Getting your Coast Broadband TP-Link VX230v online takes about five minutes. We supply it on FTTN and FTTB connections, which run over the phone line.

Your VX230v comes pre-configured for your Coast Broadband service, so in most cases you just need to cable it up and power it on. Wait until you've had our SMS or email confirming your service is active before you start.

1. What this modem is for

We supply the VX230v on FTTN and FTTB connections, because it has the built-in modem those connections need. They run over the phone line, so there's no separate connection box on the wall, you plug straight into a phone wall socket. (On other connection types we supply the TP-Link HB210 Pro instead.)

2. Cable it up

  1. Plug the grey DSL cable from the modem's DSL port into your main phone wall socket.
  2. Connect the power adaptor and switch the modem on.
  3. Wait 2 to 5 minutes while it connects. The internet light should go solid.
  4. Connect your devices using the Wi-Fi name and password printed on the label on the base of the modem.
The label is your friend. Every VX230v has its unique Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password printed underneath. Use those to connect the first time, you can personalise them later.
Pre-configured for you. Your VX230v arrives set up for Coast Broadband (we use IPoE), so there are no connection settings to enter, just cable it up and power on.

Add another unit for whole-home Wi-Fi (mesh)

The VX230v supports EasyMesh, so you can add a TP-Link HB210 Pro unit to extend coverage into a larger or double-storey home. Both units share the same Wi-Fi name, so your devices roam between them automatically.

  1. Place the HB210 Pro in the same room as the VX230v to pair it, and power it on. Give it about 2 minutes to start up.
  2. Press the WPS button on the VX230v (your main unit).
  3. Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on the second unit.
  4. Wait up to 2 minutes for them to pair, the second unit's signal/mesh light goes solid once connected.
  5. Move the second unit to roughly halfway between the main unit and the area with weak Wi-Fi, then power it back on. It reconnects on its own.
Placement matters: the second unit needs a strong link back to the main one. If its mesh light is weak or red, move it a little closer.

Lights not going solid?

  • Check the grey DSL cable is in the modem's DSL port and firmly in your main phone wall socket.
  • Give it a full 5 minutes on first connect, the initial sync can take a little while.
  • Try a power cycle.
