BYO router settings guide

Prefer to use your own modem or router on Coast Broadband? Here's what your device needs, and how to get the exact settings for your connection.

You're welcome to bring your own router. As long as it's compatible with your nbn® or OptiComm connection type, it'll work on Coast Broadband. The trick is matching the router to your technology and entering the right connection mode.

First, is your router compatible?

  • Fibre / cable (FTTP, HFC, Fixed Wireless): almost any modern router with a WAN/Internet (Ethernet) port works, it plugs into your nbn® or OptiComm connection box.
  • Copper (FTTN, FTTB): you need a VDSL2-capable modem-router, as it connects over the phone line.
  • FTTC: you need a router with a WAN Ethernet port, it connects to the small nbn® connection device (NCD).

What to configure

Coast Broadband uses IPoE (you may see it shown as "Dynamic IP" or DHCP) on all connections, so there's no PPPoE username or password to enter. In your router's admin settings:

  • Set the WAN / internet connection type to IPoE (Dynamic IP / DHCP).
  • Leave any PPPoE username and password fields blank, they aren't used.
Not sure which settings to use? IPoE covers the connection type on both nbn® and OptiComm. Call us on 1300 899 174 or start a live chat and we'll confirm the exact settings for your connection and stay on the line while you test.

Good to know

  • A Coast Broadband supplied modem (the VX230v or HB210) arrives pre-configured, no settings to enter.
  • We can help you get a BYO router online, but we can't troubleshoot the internal features of a third-party device.
